ANNUAL REPORT
July 2009-June 2010
Members:
At the conclusion of the MLA Annual
Meeting held March 2010
in
Report on Activities
As
part of the subcommittee chair’s liaison responsibilities,
In
July 2009, the subcommittee chair and Beth
Iseminger, then chair
of the Subject Access subcommittee, coordinated the BCC response to the
first
draft of Functional Requirements for
Subject Authority Data: a Conceptual Model, prepared by the
IFLA Working
Group on Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Records (FRSAR). The BCC-approved comments
were submitted to
the IFLA Working Group on July 31 and are available on the BCC website.
During
the September 2009 meeting of the MLA Board, the document The Music Library Association Statement on
Authority Control, written
by subcommittee members
In
January 2010, the subcommittee began preliminary discussions about the
concept
of work records for non-Western art music.
The subcommittee chair, based on suggestions from
subcommittee members,
created a core reading list concerning the concept of a musical work. Discussions held at the
subcommittee business
meeting at MLA Annual were wide-ranging and thought-provoking and may
possibly
provide a way forward with this project.
List
of previous goals and progress made
toward each goal
In
the annual report submitted to the Board in July 2009, the subcommittee
chair
expressed a desire to investigate the concept of work and expression
records
for ethnic, folk, and populamusic.
Some progress on this goal was made from January-March
2010, as
described in the activities of the subcommittee.
No further work has been done since the 2010
MLA Annual Meeting.
List
of goals for the next year
At
the Descriptive Subcommittee business meeting at MLA Annual, there was
some
discussion about possible collaboration between Descriptive and
Authorities in
proposing possible revisions to the works and expressions chapters in Resource Description & Access
(RDA)
or in collaborating to produce a best practices document for describing
and
providing access to works and expressions.
The subcommittee chair believes that this is desirable and
intends to
work with the Descriptive subcommittee chair in making this
collaboration a
reality.
The subcommittee chair also wishes to re-start the discussions held in March 2010 about the concept of work and expression records for non-Western art music, possibly in September. It is hoped that the ensuing conversation will identify more concrete ways in which to proceed with the project.
